Test new and existing wells for salts, bacteria and nitrates, then compare softeners, filters or reverse osmosis.

Private wells in Texas are the owner's responsibility to test. In the Lower Valley, groundwater is often high in dissolved salts (brackish), and shallow wells can pick up bacteria or nitrates. Test a new well before you rely on it and retest periodically. Depending on results, treatment can range from a sediment filter or chlorination to a water softener or reverse-osmosis system.
